Welcome to The Real Parenting Show with Dr. Pete & Sara… a pediatric psychologist and a mom teaming up to provide straightforward advice and practical tips for real parents raising real kids in the real world.

This week, we introduce ourselves, tell you about our professional careers and parenting styles. In future podcasts, we’ll be tackling various subjects of concern to parents. From handling temper tantrums in the terrible two’s to helping your college student adjust to campus life, we’ll give you tried and true advice and strategies to help you make your parenting decisions.

Let’s first fill you in on who we are and where we come from. Peter L. Stavinoha, Ph.D., is a Clinical Neuropsychologist in the Center for Pediatric Psychiatry at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas and Associate Professor in Psychiatry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He was named Distinguished Psychologist for 2005 by the Dallas Psychological Association.   Dr. Stavinoha specializes in the cognitive, behavioral, and emotional aspects of developmental disabilities and acquired brain injury in children.  He is also an expert in general parenting, and is a regular guest on WFAA-TV’s “Good Morning Texas” where he gives parenting advice about common issues facing children and families.  He received a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Notre Dame and a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin.  Dr. Stavinoha completed a residency in Clinical Neuropsychology at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Stavinoha is a member of the American Psychological Association, the International Neuropsychological Society, and the National Academy of Neuropsychology.  Dr. Stavinoha and his wife have an 11-year old son named Joe.

Sara Au is a journalist specializing in parenting and health issues, in addition to being mom to 6-year old son, Derek, and 4-year old daughter, Kathleen. She’s written for such publications as ePregnancy Magazine, FitBody Magazine, Overlook View Magazine, the Girl Scout’s Leader Magazine, East Orlando Sun newspaper and Insight Magazine. In her life B.C. (before children), Sara produced breaking news and top story coverage for CNN. She has a B.A. from Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications, lives with her family in Florida.

Before creating this podcast, Dr. Pete and Sara teamed up to write Stress-Free Potty Training, A Commonsense Guide To Finding The Right Approach For Your Child. With Dr. Pete’s professional guidance, our book allows you to peek inside your child’s mind and potty-train based on his or her personal character traits. It was just published in June 2008, and is available in most bookstores – bricks and mortar as well as online. We’ll tackle potty training issues throughout our time on The Real Parenting Show, but if you need specific help with that issue now, check out our website, www.StressFreePottyTraining.com, for more information.

In the meantime, we’re happy to be working together again on this podcast and look forward to your suggestions, comments and feedback. This truly is the real world of parenting, where there’s no magic one-day solution to any tough issue, just valuable advice, proven strategies and moral support. That’s what we provide.

Please note, nothing on The Rea l Parenting Show should be construed as professional psychological advice specific to you or your child. If you have concerns for anyone in your family, it’s important to make an appointment with a licensed mental health professional in your local area. Thanks for listening to The Real Parenting Show with Dr. Pete & Sara… and remember, even though you may not always feel like it, you are the most influential person in your child’s life!
