Welcome to The Real Parenting Show with Dr. Pete & Sara… respectively the Tiger Woods and Gabby Reece of the podcast world!
All kidding aside, giving your child a healthy introduction to the world of sports will certainly set the tone for her or his interest in it for the rest of their lives. While Tiger was putting on the green at the Tonight Show at the age of three, there are not too many other phenoms like him. The object of participating in a sport is to develop interest and basic skills, not to aspire to a hall of fame or the championship finals. To that end, all children should be allowed to play, and the goals of enjoyment, skill building, and sportsmanship must be paramount early on.
Helping your child find the right sport for him or her can sometimes be a tight balancing act. Dr. Pete, himself a baseball dad, takes us through the importance of good sportsmanship, appropriate responses for poor sportsmanship, how to react when a child’s interest wanes, and dealing with league philosophies.
Please note, nothing on The Real Parenting Show should be construed as professional psychological advice specific to you or your child. If you have concerns for anyone in your family, it’s important to make an appointment with a licensed mental health professional in your local area.
