Welcome to The Real Parenting Show with Dr. Pete & Sara… we’re happy you’re listening. This week, we discuss how to deal with economic uncertainty, and, perhaps more pointedly, how to help your children deal.

A lot of the stress a parent feels stems from financial burden (or financial uncertainty) and the strain this might place on a family. Tighter budgets can mean a change in the standard of living. The loss of a job might mean schedule changes, childcare changes, as well as lots more stress.

Remember, a large part of successful parenting is role-modeling for your children how to handle life’s stresses. It is important to let your kids know what you are going through to the extent that they need to know and can understand. This, obviously, varies with age and maturity level. Being truthful with your children is essential, but only share with them what they need to know.  Kids will take their cues of how to respond from their parents, so the emotions you show your children, either overtly or covertly, are the ones that they are likely to have.

Dr. Pete Stavinoha, a child neuropsychologist, offers specific tips for parents in difficult financial times and it all comes down to active coping – doing something, no matter how small, to contribute to a solution to the problems. Click below to listen to all of Dr. Pete’s tips, and we hope you’ll subscribe to receive our podcast each week.
